Our last day in Paris is upon us!! 😭😭 Time has flown the fuck by, but like that Winnie the Pooh quote, how lucky I am to have something to miss once it’s gone, right? On this day my brother actually had a pretty bad stomach bug of some sort, so my dad stayed home with him while my mom and I went out. (It worked out well, because my dad also had a conference call for work that day.) Our planned destinations were the Palais Garnier and the Galeries de Lafayette, which were both lessons in how majestic and grand and expensive-looking places could be, and then we also stopped in some random stores to see what a French supermarket was like. (Spoiler: very nice. Very, very nice. They have candles shaped like purple chickens!!)
It’s the second to last day of Paris, and so my second to last post about Paris! I bet you’re kind of tired of all my “omg, Paris is amaaaazing” whining, eh? Anyway, day 6 was our basic bee day, in that we went to the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, and got macarons at Ladurée. Say what you will about being a basic bee, but there’s a reason these things are so mainstream, and that reason is that they’re DAMN good! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Day 5 in Paris for us was also, as it turned out, the day of the Paris Marathon! I sound excited, but I am really not, because running and me have been kindred enemies since the early days of my life. Anyway, this morning we woke up a little earlier, so we also got to wake up a little slower. We had breakfast at our Airbnb before heading out – our day’s itinerary included the Centre Pompidou (which was France’s national museum of modern art), the Sainte-Chapelle, and the Jardin du Luxembourg. On y va! (Or is it allons-y? High school French taught me nothing…)
I’m bummed to report that our fourth day in Paris got off to a kinda rocky start, in that we all slept in until, like, 10:30AM… 😔 Since my brother and I get free entry to all the national museums and monuments, we decided we’d sleep in a little more (this sounds like a reasonable decision which we considered carefully, but in reality it was just our mom saying, “Hey, get up ya lazy heads! We need to get to the Louvre!” and us rolling over, mumbling “No, you go, we sleep,” and pulling our blankets over our heads until they left), so my brother Ken and I left the house at noon. Whoops! This did, however, give us the opportunity to have a nice, relaxed brunch at a restaurant close to our Airbnb.
How the frickity frack is it the end of April already?! Four months of 2017 are down, and I still feel like it’s 2012 and we’re talking about the potential apocalypse. (Of course, we could have gone through it already and just not know. You and I are in hell because Trump is president and climate change is a Thing.) Anyway, this month in review has my family’s trip to Paris, a Kid Cudi song from 2013 that I’ve just discovered, some new things I’ve acquired (including a wax seal, a Harry Potter card, and a nerdy tooth guard), and, of course, cat photos.
1. bonjour paris!
Our third day in Paris was our only day trip out of the city – we went to Versailles! The morning started with a stop in a random grocery store for supplies for the picnic lunch we planned to have at Versailles. My brother agonized for ages over how to ask for brie cheese in French, and when he finally worked up the nerve to ask the employees there, they just vaguely waved a hand in the direction of the cheese section. 😒 We found brie cheese in the end, though!
Day 2 of Paris brings us to the Marché Bastille (a local farmer’s market, from what I can tell), Place des Vosges (which is described as “one of the finest [squares] in the city” by Wikipedia, and is apparently where all the fancy rich people liked to live in the 17th and 18th centuries), Victor Hugo’s old house/museum (which my Mom demanded to see, although I’m not sure why because I’ve never seen her read a complete book…), and Notre Dame (which doesn’t need an introductory sidenote). It also brought some snails into my belly. When in France, eh?
On the morning of Wednesday the 5th of April, my family and I went on our spraaaaaang break vacation to – PARIS!!! Like all cliché impressionist art/Madewell/baguette-loving women out there, I am hopelessly enamored with Paris/France. A Parisian could sneer at my favorite shoes and I might think something like, “Oh wow, merci beaucoup for noticing little ol’ me!” Anyway, this is the start of what will be an 8-part photo diary of our 8 days in the city of love/light/ladies in the Cool Parisian Girl uniform of striped shirts and leather jackets. (+ cigarettes, which aren’t so cool because, you know, lung cancer.)
Day 1 was our train ride to Paris from London, followed by the Musée National du Moyen Âge/National Museum of the Middle Ages and the Pantheon! Also some, uh, fine French cuisine in the form of McDonald’s, because that is what you get to eat when you let your 14-year-old brother decide what’s for lunch. Insert eyeroll emoji here.
